The World of Greek Myth

A puzzle design themed around characters, settings and events in Greek Myth.

Dimensions: 421mm x 421mm

Medium: Digital

For the last 10 years, I’ve been hugely invested in Greek Mythology, to the extent that I very nearly chose to do a degree in Classics, rather than Illustration. I did a lot of searching to try and find a puzzle design involving Greek myths, like the gorgeous Lawrence King “the world of …” puzzles, but couldn’t find any, so it felt like a great opportunity to design one of my own!

The whole process was a lot of fun; especially coming up with character designs for gods, heroes and monsters, and thinking of ways to incorporate key symbols and little nods to various lesser known myths.

My background in Classics also helped me to create an informed and interesting setting for the stories to interact within.

Making a Puzzle

Because of the square dimensions of my design, I couldn’t find any company that could print my puzzle professionally, so I had to do it myself.

After a lot of research and experimentation, I settled on laser cutting the pieces from my design mounted on MDF.

Though it was quite a fiddly and time consuming process, I think I like the sort of traditional feel of the wooden pieces, and the slight burning round the edge of the pieces creates quite a nice rustic effect that works well thematically.

Having said this, I would love to get this design published properly so more people can enjoy learning about Greek Mythology!
